PostSubject: A new solar regulator & possibly some batteries   A new solar regulator & possibly some batteries I_icon_minitimeSat 29 Dec 2012 - 15:07

Any advice?
Don't trust this one I have got, just been down to the van and a red light was showing meaning there was no battery connected, checked all connections, disconnected and re-connected in right order and the light won't go out, after checking the battery there was only 11v in it, went through all its history and at some point it had put 15v in, might have only been momentarily but it has still done it, it has done this once before so now's the time for a new one I think.
I have 3 batteries, 2 run the van and the 3rd one just runs 2 x 12v sockets used for phone charging, wireless router and also stays live while the ignition is turned on, rest of the van goes off with ignition on. It's the single battery that was down, going to put it on charge and see if it's any good or not.
The regulator I have is a dual one but I might have a re-think about my layout, get 3 new batteries and connect them all together and forget about the separate one, I only did that because the battery I got with the van was a different size from the other two, biggest I can fit in is 315mm X 175mm - height isn't a problem, I have found 3 x 100AH Numax for £190
Ones in now are only 85AH, so that will give me a lot more ie 300 instead of 170, that should keep Adele and her telly happy for a bit longer Very Happy

I don't mind him bringing the book, It's the lump hammer that scares me.
Decided to go for the 3 batteries and connect them all together, after all these I have now must be 6 year old so they have done pretty well

Any advice on regulators?
I don't need a dual one now, my regulator goes under the seats where the batteries are, so I could do with one with a separate display panel if possible so I can keep my eye on it Very Happy

No, everything will be Ok Polly
Just make sure they will fit, your are probably the same size as mine, about 260mm long, the 110's will be 330mm or above, I Can fit up to 315mm and found some 100ah batteries at 302mm long

Yeah
Either get a dual regulator or there's a device you can get that will charge your vehicle battery once the leisure batteries are charged, Andy will tell you what it's called when he comes on, I have one fitted and they work well, they are about £25 if I remember right

Cheers Andy, but that's the one I have now and don't have much trust with them now.
THESE use the same remote display panel, whats your thoughts on these?
I have had a thought of somewhere else I could possibly mount the regulator, will need to go to the van tomorrow and check if it is suitable, if it is then I wont need the remote display

PS - why have they got a load terminal? mine doesn't have this, just solar in and battery 1 and 2 out

Nearly all regulators have load terminals. They are commonly used for remote traffic signs illumination or speed warning signs where mains electric would cost to much to get there and have user programmable timers
If your going to buy from china don't by that crap welsee have the worst reputation for mppt regulators

Cheers, advice taken.
Just looking at that one because of the remote meter.
I'll have a look tomorrow and see what alternative locations I can use, about 4 foot away from the batteries should be Ok shouldn't it with 4mm cable?
I don't want to be lifting the seats up to check the charging affraid

Just thinking,
Because all my electrics go off when the ignition is on, if I decided I wanted some power in the back when moving, ie for a small light, charging a phone or something then I suppose I could use the load terminals on the regulator, maybe wire that up to the 2 x 12v sockets my 2nd battery used to supply
