I bought my van as a project for me to do, and I duly started to refurbish it. So I went to Weston Park and enjoyed the rally, but because of what I found out about the van, I decided to do a complete rebuild. The van is the noisiest van I have ever had, ( road noise ) and it is a very cold van. At Weston we did have some cold nights and I really felt it, and the double glazed windows were a joke. So I am deconstructing at the moment and finding all the dirty tricks that manufacturers get up to, like screws that come from the outside into furniture, and the electrical system, which at best is chaotic. The gas cupboard is a one piece fibre glass molding, but from the dirt round the edges is not sealed to the wall. I will be retaining the floor, but trimming approx 3" of both sides which should get rid of any dry rot, and losing the overcab bed and opting for storage space, and redefining the roof line, which hopefully will make it a tad more aero-dynamic. A lot to do, so no rallys for me at the moment, but my plan is to make a warm, comfortable and practical van.

started on Monday

I found this above the overhead kitchen cupboard, manufacturers carefully prepared hole, the grey in the hole is the roof aluminum
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

One of the top corners of the overcab bed. One of the problems with plastic coated walls is the damp being held back, so by the time it does show, it is usually too late.

Today was getting the rest of the kitchen out, a lot of rusty screws here, and the method of construction was unnecessarily complicated. My motto is, make it strong, but keep it simple.

Not yet Bob, I have got use of a barn, but I would need to buy a banger to get to it. Am waiting for word from a local coach company within walking distance, and on a bus route. I've got all the interior out and need one more trip to the recycle centre, then I will be ready to start taking the body down. Once I have a watertight shell, I will be able to do the fitout at home.

Today I removed the waste water tank, not too easy as the nuts were a tad rusty. Glad I wasn't under it, as it had a blockage, and when it landed, it emptied the most foul, disgusting yuk out, good job I park on a bit of a slope! Then I did a little work on my Truma heater with a wire brush. Treated it to some Kurust and a coat of zinc 182 paint.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Hoping to get the van under cover next week and start taking the body off, what fun.

There are hundreds of little jobs, the ones that seem to take forever to get done, so here's another little job that got done, this is the hole in the floor where the heater sits. the gas supply comes here and air is drawn into the combustion chamber, and the position of the hole dictates positioning of the cupboard surrounding the heater.

Compass prepared hole:-

Stage 2 now begins, initially it is slow going as I need to recover some things like the door, and locker doors, and possibly some roof timbers. Found a lot of dry rot round the step and as I suspected, the overcab bed has its fair share.

Not much to show today, despite being at it all day, had to remove four rusty nuts on the rear frame. I chased a " little " dry rot out of the rear corner and then discovered that I would have to repair both rear corners, no point in burying trouble, cos it would surface somewhere down the line. Started on the framework with timbers recovered in the pull down, so tomorrow will confirm my timber order, and start building in ernest.

My timber arrived just before lunch, so now I can start. The floor is framed and strengthened and I've started on the door frame and step, so slowly it begins to rise.

The timber is treated, so hopefully it will last.
