Beware if you have a Towbar fitted

Beware if you have a Towbar fitted, after reading an article in this months C&CC magazine about a chap that was rear ended in his car and made a claim on his insurance, it was declined because he had NOT informed them he had a towbar fitted, it is a modification to the vehicle and therefore the Ins. company must be informed.

I checked with my Ins. company and they told me the same NO you would not have been covered for any damage caused by the towbar on my vehicle, a quick amendment to my policy F.O.C. and all is now tickety boo.

So beware if you have a towbar fitted on your car/motorhome and have not informed the Ins. Co.it may be wise to just make a quick call and inform them.

I once found a three wheeler Reliant Robin with a towbar! It was when I was a bus driver, was in a bit of a rush, but not speeding, came round a bend and the traffic had stopped unexpectedly, applied the brakes and discovered that I had total brake failure, including the handbrake, hit him square on, but did no damage to the Robin, because of the towbar. You just never know do you!

Mark, it was a bit of a surprise/shock to realise that anyone could be involved in a shunt and then find out your not covered it could be a very expensive oversight.

Didn't you get insurance for towing the caravan? surely that would be a clue to the insurers

Yes of course, but not from the same company 

I bet 90% haven't notified that!

Would it not be the same for a bike rack or bike/scooter rack? Or even the back rack?

Don't know Steve but I would check up just for piece of mind

It never occured to me that that was possible, surely a conflict of interests at claim time over who is responsible for what in their attempts to get out of coughing.
I only had one caravan and I made sure it was covered by my car insurer.

Agree Andy, but the car was already insured and the best deal I got was with the C&CC for the van, hence the two insurance companies, now at renewal that another thing.
