| Received this news item from the Highways Agency this morning: Highways Agency Dartford Crossing Remote Payment Scheme Update | 20-01-2015 | HIGHWAYS AGENCY
| [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] | HIGHWAYS AGENCY UPDATES Dartford Crossing Remote Payment Scheme |
| You’ve subscribed to be updated on the progress of road works at the Dartford Crossing. Shorter journeys Since we introduced Dart Charge, drivers have been saving on average 9 minutes crossing southbound and 4 minutes crossing northbound. Our work on the new road layout is going well and we are on track for completion in spring. You’ll benefit from even shorter journey times once this work is complete. Tunnel safetySome vehicles are too big for one or both of the Dartford tunnels; others carry dangerous loads meaning they cannot use the tunnels or require an escort. In the past we’ve identified and managed these vehicles at the payment barriers. Going forward we will manage these vehicles with a new safety system. Lanes at the side of the main carriageway allow us to direct vehicles quickly and efficiently, minimising delays for other drivers. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] An overheight lorry being turned around using the new safety system The new system includes:
- detectors to identify vehicles that are oversized or carrying dangerous loads
- signs to encourage drivers to get in the correct lane in good time
- barriers and traffic signals to direct vehicles, bring them to a safe stop and turn them around if necessary – these will only be in use when a vehicle needs to be directed
We have been thoroughly testing this safety system and work to install it begins shortly. We aim to complete installation by early April. Tall vehiclesThe new road layout in place at the crossing does not allow you to change lanes. New signs direct oversized vehicles to the appropriate lanes, but some HGV drivers are assuming they can change lanes later, only to get stuck in the wrong lane. If you drive a tall vehicle, follow the new signs and get in the correct lane as soon as you can after junction 2. Getting in the wrong lane causes delays for other drivers and could result a fine and points on your licence. Prevention is the best approach, so we’re working with freight and haulage associations - including overseas organisations - to make sure drivers are aware of the new road layout and of the tunnel height and other restrictions. For more information go to Goods vehicle guidance. | |
