First time to Italy

Hi

Got the tunnel booked for mid May to mid July and thinking of travelling to the Italian Lakes for the first time.  Anyone ideas on which routes, toll or non toll? I don't fancy any high, twisting mountain passes though!! We have a 3,500 ton almost 7.5 metre long motorhome.

Also suitable aires or campsites en route anyone can recommend. I hear Lake Garda can be rather busy/commercial, maybe Lake Como too? Any thoughts on that or other lakes and campsites you can recommend?


We are also travelling with our dog and need to take her needs into consideration.  She's a Labrador and loves the water - are dogs allowed to swim in the lakes or if we then go further south to the coast are they allowed on any Italian beaches??

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Sorry no help from me, as haven't been myself, although this will be very interesting to follow as we will be looking to go through Italy over the next couple of years!

Hi Inga, it is quite difficult to get to Lake Como/Lake Garda without going over or at least through the mountains, you will have to plan a route through either Switzerland/Austria/France and all involve mountains. 

I suggest you google routes, toll and non toll and choose the one that suits you best and as for stopovers you can do worse than use searchforsites.co.uk to plan your stops as all kinds of sites are catered for including both Aires/Sosta's/ and campsite of all types.

We have been 3 times and really enjoyed Italy but we also like mountains and the more peaceful areas, I had sunstroke real bad at Lake Como in July and every campsite wanted a fortune to stay on, in fact the car park we were on was £27 p.n. with NO facilities right on the shore of Lake Como.

I am sure others will give you the benefit of the experiences, so look at all the info before making your minds up, but most of all enjoy it.
