Calais to Cannes , has anyone done this trip non toll roads ,

I have a friend that wants to go down to the South of France but doesn't want to pay the tolls , I've done a search , it recommends , Belguim Luxenburg then straight down to the south through Grasse, has anyone done this trip? Is it all good roads and not through towns and villages ? I've been down many times but done the toll roads , your thoughts would be helpful , Dugi
