Ypres, Belgium Aire

Post by Monty the Motorhome on Thu 8 May 2014 - 18:21

Another one we stayed at but on the campsite not the Aire that is attached - We would use the aire next time.

Excellent for the Menim Gate and Ypres - just 10 min walk away

Bruges

Post by pheasantplucker on Sat 12 Dec 2015 - 23:06

Our first continental adventure and we booked a couple of nights at a site at Jabbeke about 10k from Bruges.

It was a Bank Holiday and we were driving around the narrow streets in our 24 ft van in
competition with the follow the red umbrella tourists, the cyclists who think they have priority and the horse and carriage rides who are sure they have priority!

Found an aire near the river, one side was shared with coaches and the motorhomes were packed in tight. Across the road was an aire for about 20 vans, nicely spaced, but 22 Euros with EHU and waste dumps. Water was an extra 2 Euros, but we'd already booked an extra night at Jabbeke for 25 Euros with all facilities. Just paid and were happy to have somewhere to leave the van. Payment was automated at the office across the road where the manager spoke excellent English. Some of these continental pay machines are a bit hard to understand.

I did find that the satnav seems to lag somewhat. When it counts down the distance to turnings and comes to turn right in 80 yards, it invariably means the turning which you're just passing! We did see some rather untouristy bits of Belgium.

In Ypres, we turned before the Menin Gate alongside a moat (?) and pulled onto a hardstanding on a cul de sac with some other vans and a couple of commercial vehicles and walked in for thr Last Post. It was particularly busy as it was VE Day.

Stayed in the town for the rest of the evening, found some food and some music and overnighted where we were parked.
