What is a phishing email?

You may have received an email falsely claiming to be from PayPal or
another known entity. This is called "phishing" because the sender is
"fishing" for your personal data. The goal is to trick you into clicking
through to a fake or "spoofed" website, or into calling a bogus customer
service number where they can collect and steal your sensitive personal
or financial information.

We will carefully review the content reported to us to certify that the
content is legitimate. We will contact you if we need any additional
information for investigating the matter. Please take note to the
security tips provided above as they may help to answer any questions
that you may have about the email you are reporting to us.

Help! I responded to a phishing email!

If you have responded to a phishing email and provided any personal
information, or if you think someone has used your account without
permission, you should immediately change your password and security
questions.

You should also report it to PayPal immediately and we'll help protect
you as much as possible.
1. Open a new browser and type in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
2. Log in to your PayPal account.
3. Click "Security and Protection" near the top of the page.
4. Click "Identify a problem."
5. Click "I think someone may be using my account without
permission."
6. Click "Unauthorized Account Activity."

Thank you for your help making a difference.

Every email counts. By forwarding a suspicious-looking email to

identity theft.

Thanks,

I also have had several of these emails over the last week or so, completely ignored them but went online the correct way to verify my a/c had not been compromised, as yet all is clear but be very careful at this time of year especially as we are all (well some of us) using the internet for purchasing gifts ect. Kens warning is very clear .

Ditto, The only way I realised it was a scam was that I knew I hadn't ordered anything so didn't open it!!!.
The important thing to remember with this type of scam is to look at your actual account as Bob says, then you will see that there has been no transaction.

I have had DOZENS of E mails just like the one quoted above.
I had a camera for sale on E bay a few months ago and had a message from a potential buyer asking for my E mail so he could make me an offer.  While I knew this to be outside the "safety" rules I didn't want this person interfering with the sale so I sent my E mail.  He mailed me asking how much to buy it now and offered me a little more to include postage so I agreed, he then sent me a message purporting to come from PP saying the funds had been transferred to my account and that I could now dispatch the goods with complete confidence.
I mailed this guy in South Africa saying the money was in my account and I would send the camera at the weekend.  I put his name into google, lo and behold up popped his Facebook page, family pictures and all, two little girls, lovely looking wife, dog, extended family etc.  I strung him along for the next several days until the camera was sold, he kept asking for the tracking number, I said a neighbour had posted it for me and lost the receipt, he asked me to get a copy, I said I would do it the next day, he asked again where it was and I said the PO was closed due to a family bereavement but he should have the camera in the morning as I sent it special delivery and so it went on.  The camera was sold and duely dispatched (to an honest man) and I email the guy in SA with pictures of his wife and daughters saying how nice they all looked and what a pity they had a thief and a fraudster for a husband and father, think he may have been a little surprised.  After that I received so many PP E mails of every type you can think of, the first one I told PP of the incident and gave them the mans E address.  Each time I sent mail to PP I received the generic E mail seen from the OP above or similar.
The above is a typical example and the advice given is excellent, be careful, they are out there waiting for those with no guard up.
I thought I would send him a "camera looking" parcel so duly wrapped one up including pictures of his family, went to the PO and it would have cost £114 to send so I binned that idea Very Happy .
