My existing battery setup is as above, I am thinking of putting in a 3rd battery of equal size and age (less than 18" away) but I am a lttle confused as to the exact wiring position of the 3rd battery connections, anyone got any ideas please.

Think of it like this Bob

Make sure there is a fuse between the batteries, if it's only a short length and the wire can't touch anything if it comes away you'll get away with one
if the wire come away and it could touch anything, then put two in, one at each end

I have never connected the battery that way myself as I always go + too 1st terminal (fused) then to 2nd + (fused)
_ to 2nd terminal then return to 1st terminal

Thats the way I was told for equal and maximum charge scratch

Is that a -ve?
2 batteries connected together will equalise, thats why they must be the same rating or one will fail very quickly, some say take +ve from one battery and -ve from another, think this is personal opinion, personally I don't think it makes any difference

My batteries are connected your way at present, but I have always had them connected my way before on advise from "experts" on MHFs and I have PMd Clive Mott a really good man with many things related to M/Hs but is an expert on batteries. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Lets see what his advise is Rolling Eyes

For equal and max charge, some manufacturers say that when connecting a bank of 3 or more batteries to take the feed (neg and pos) from the centre battery or centre point. Maybe WG has done this, can't tell from the schematic. Personally I would take the shortest route.

Just my opinion !

On your original drawing, your basically doing this (but for 2, I added a 3rd)

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Putting a separate feed to each battery, I'm not saying it doesn't work, it will, can't see what benefit you'll get

I'd agree with that, especially if there is any distance between the batteries

Just to throw a spanner in the works as I have seen many opinions over the years. I am not saying one is better than the other :-x

:-k Steve, method 2 is the one I have always used for the last 17 yrs, the present ones are as method 1 and I think this is not the correct way, so I think with three batteries method two will be the most efficient

Certainly is Ken and like I have always done, furthest v+ and work backward, nearest v- and work forwards, but I have never had 3 batteries before and was unsure.
