I know why it's called a grandfather clock Smile

The George at Piercebridge, which isn't very far from us, was owned by two brothers who had a long case clock. (Previous name for Grandfather clock). When one of the brothers died the clock lost a number of minutes each day. Clock repairers were unable to find the reason why. However when the second brother died the clock stopped, never to go again. In the late 1800s an American traveller, stayed at The George and was in awe of the clock and wrote a song about it calling the long case clock a Grandfather clock. Believe there is a plaque in The George relating the story.

At last someone has found a more believable theory,  thanks Joyce.
Although I like to think the other one was true.
thanks Bob Laughing
