French RN roads subject to tolls Planned

It looks like the French are at it again, this time intending making thousands of French RN type roads subject to tolls for vehicles over 3500kg.

It looks like and reads like (follow the links there are lots of them) they will be for HGV commercial carrying vehicles but as motorhomes/camping cars are not individually or specifically mentioned it is causing some concern.

It all starts in the Alsace region in April 2013

Jan, just worked out (roughly) if they do impose the tolls it would cost around €120 each way to drive to the Alsace region, and too drive from Calais to the Spanish border would be around €200 e/w.

The big problem is if this system works it will be brought into force by all the EU countries so travelling around Europe could be very costly, and if they all adopt their own method of collecting the tolls by auto GO box (like Austria) we could possibly end up with several of these on our dashboards.

I reckon if its brought in we would have to have a rethink on our traveling plans. There is no way we would pay those sort of figures.

It is early days and as I understand it nobody is sure whether campers are going to be charged. We know what the French are like for changing their minds you only have to look at the breathalyzer issue that seems to be on the back burner now.
