Don’t know if this is any use to you.

I have used any Video converter ultimate to convert the dvd to mp4 or avi format

Pete if you want to play the films on the new TV make sure you convert the files to (MPEG 2) as I have found this works ok, perhaps use AVS Video converter download this program for free...worked for me! I.T. problem 754408299

Are they originals Pete?
If do they will be in something like .VOB files, you'll need to rip them in something like Nero DVD or DVD decryptor

Long while since I have done it Pete, never saved to an hard drive though, always written onto a DVD but sure there was options to save as other file types.
DVD decrypter and DVD shrink I found were the best, it did get forced to close at one point but it is still available, think they got round it by not continuing with the development of it or something, so new encryption types it might not be able to deal with.
Don't know if things have changed or not, but at one point it was decided legal if you were copying a disc that you own, just for your personal use and as back up

Hi, I would have thought if the videos play from the DVD, all you need to do is connect the portable hard drive to your computer, then put the DVD in the Computers DVD drive, then open windows file manager and copy and paste the files on the DVD to the portable hard drive, just the same as you would copy to your internal hard drive.

Most things you could do like that, ie documents, photos, music but DVD''s are encrypted to stop you copying them
