Amazing but not surprising how people respond in times of adversity, many of the port city's were very badly damaged including some of the smaller ones such as Gloucester. The River Severn was used as a navigation aid, this was lined with anti-aircraft batteries some of which were on two golf courses (now) that I worked on but 15 miles apart. These often had searchlight units attached to them and several German aircraft were bought down into the river and surrounding area.
